Thirty kilometres east of Rome, in the hills of Tivoli, stand two of the great villas of Italian history, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Hadrian's Villa was the emperor's private city, a landscape of pools, libraries and pavilions he designed after his travels through Greece and Egypt. Villa d'Este, fifteen centuries later, is the Renaissance answer: a cardinal's garden built on water, with hundreds of fountains cascading down the hillside.
A private car collects you from your hotel and waits while you visit at your own pace; lunch in Tivoli, overlooking the Aniene valley, fits naturally between the two. The villas are closed on Mondays.
Day experience, accommodation not included. For your stay in Rome we suggest Donna Camilla Savelli, a seventeenth-century convent designed by Francesco Borromini, with its cloister and garden in the heart of Trastevere.
Duration: 6 hours, with hotel pickup in Rome
