Most visitors see the Colosseum from the upper tiers. This private tour takes you down: onto the reconstructed arena floor, where the games were staged, and into the hypogeum below, the maze of corridors, cages and lifts where gladiators and animals waited before being raised into the light.
Access to the underground is limited and sold in small numbers, which is why it is best booked well ahead. After the Colosseum, your guide continues through the Roman Forum and up the Palatine Hill, where Rome's emperors built their palaces above the city.
A morning or afternoon in the ancient heart of Rome, fifteen minutes by taxi from Donna Camilla Savelli in Trastevere.
