For centuries the Castelli Romani, the volcanic hills south of Rome, were where popes and Roman nobles came to escape the summer heat, and where the city bought its wine. Frascati is the best known of these towns, and its white wine the one Romans still drink every day.
This visit takes you into a family estate on the edge of town: the vineyards on volcanic soil, the old cellars carved into the tufa and a cave where wine is aged in amphorae, as in Roman times. Three wines are poured, followed by lunch in the style of the Castelli, with porchetta, local cheeses and the dishes of the fraschette, the country taverns of the area.
Frascati is thirty minutes by regional train from Roma Termini; a private transfer from your hotel can be arranged.
Day experience, accommodation not included. For your stay in Rome we suggest Donna Camilla Savelli, a seventeenth-century convent designed by Francesco Borromini, with its cloister and garden in the heart of Trastevere.
Duration: 3 hours at the estate in Frascati (30 minutes from Rome by train)
