Located in the heart of the Mauges region, on the route of the Loire Valley Châteaux, Château de la Tourlandry is a historic residence spanning centuries, from the Middle Ages to the Second Empire. Open to the public since 2019 following an ambitious revival project, the castle presents itself today as a place of tourist excellence where history, science, and botany intertwine. The current structure, completed in 1856, is a tribute to the industrial revolution and the reign of Napoleon III, who was a frequent guest of the estate. Passionately managed by owners Pascale and Philippe, the castle is a model of sustainable tourism (the In TerraMaugia project) and offers a "slow" experience immersed in nature.
Hospitality is founded on sharing and culture. Guests have access to the Second Empire lounges and a permanent exhibition on 19th-century science and technology. Outside, the 3-hectare PermaParc offers the "Flânerie Végétale", a trail featuring 200 informative botanical panels. The castle also organizes "participatory workshops" (such as cleaning the historic 12th-century moats) and promotes digital and physical accessibility. Bicycle rentals and an electric vehicle charging station powered by solar panels are available.
The "Chambres Nobles" offer an immersive 19th-century experience, with atmospheres inspired by queens, empresses, and the universe of Jules Verne. Every detail is designed for well-being and ecology:
Authentic Decoration: Original and upcycled vintage furnishings (except for the mattresses), natural fiber flooring, and walls soundproofed with hemp or recycled cotton.
Comfort & Sustainability: Linens made of natural cotton and silk fibers washed on-site, pellet heating, LED lighting, and a dual-circuit water system for rainwater harvesting.
Digital Detox: The rooms do not feature TVs, which are replaced by period books in harmony with the environment.
Unique Bathrooms: Marble walls and the use of an authentic 19th-century "TUB" (the precursor to the shower tray) as a functional antique piece.
The castle offers several dining options for guests wishing to dine on-site, with a strong focus on local sourcing:
Dîner Etape "La belle assiette": A cold platter for a light and genuine meal.
3-course Dinner: Comprising an appetizer, main course, and dessert.
4-course Gala Dinner: "French-style" service in a private lounge with period tableware and crystals, including a cheese selection. The property also features the Salon de l'Empereur, a Tea and Flower Bar where guests can enjoy artisanal infusions and syrups made from medicinal plants.
The castle stands on the highest point of Anjou (216 meters) and still preserves its water moats fed by a natural underground spring. The park is famous for the three Giant Sequoias gifted by Napoleon III. The location is ideal for exploring the Loire Valley and the Chemillé-en-Anjou region, renowned for the cultivation of medicinal plants. The property is a landmark for those seeking a deep reconnection with the environment and French history.
Please note: Bookings made via vouchers at this property do not include breakfast. Guests may request to add this service for an additional fee during the booking process or directly on-site.
