Agriturismo Ca' Gianin

Agriturismo Ca' Gianin occupies a seventeenth-century rural cluster in the hamlet of the same name in Vervio, a small Valtellina village at the foot of Monte Masuccio, between Tirano and Bormio. The house belonged to the owners' great-grandparents: the restoration kept the stone walls, the timber beams and balconies and the paved passages between the buildings, and set them alongside contemporary furniture and one-off pieces made for the property. Vervio was once a fief of the Venosta family and still preserves the remains of the noble residences of the Lavizzari.

Behind the farmhouse is the Abies farm, founded in 2003 for forestry work, which over the years has added blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and gooseberries. Shared spaces include the breakfast room, the restaurant, a stone-vaulted room with a bar counter and the lawn among the village houses. A farm stay in Valtellina with historic character and local food, about fifteen minutes from Tirano and half an hour from Bormio.

The house is family-run and the welcome is warm and informal. Guests can buy Valtellina produce on site: cheeses, yoghurt, ricotta, cured meats, flours, wine and the farm's own berry preserves, made with a reduced amount of added sugar.

Pets are welcome: in shared areas they must be kept on a lead, and they may enter the breakfast room and restaurant if used to being around other people. The whole property is non-smoking; children up to 2 years stay free.

The rooms are spread over three floors, plus an independent unit designed to welcome guests with disabilities as well. Each takes its name from the wood that defines it and scents the air: Cherry, Robinia, Birch, Beech, Chestnut, Fir, Larch, Swiss Pine, Curly Maple, Oak and Scots Pine, with doubles, twins, superiors and quadruples for families. For groups and longer stays there are two apartments, Walnut and Olive, the latter with a small terrace.

Exposed-beam ceilings, wooden floors, in some rooms headboards made of rough timber planks and a sofa bed; the private bathrooms have a contemporary design. Breakfast is served from 7.30 to 9.30 am.

The restaurant serves traditional Valtellina cooking and follows the seasons: flours, vegetables and berries come partly from the family farm, while cheeses, meats, cured meats and wine come from valley producers Ca' Gianin works with, including the Peretti and Gagetti farms, Andrea Fanchi for flours and Marcel Zanolari for wines. On the table you will find pizzoccheri, boards of local cured meats and cheeses and other mountain dishes.

The grill deserves a chapter of its own: carefully aged cuts cooked over charcoal and Cuban hardwood, alongside slow, low-temperature sous-vide preparations. The restaurant is also open to non-residents; booking a table is recommended.

Vervio lies along the road that climbs from Tirano towards Bormio. From the village you can walk or cycle up to the hamlet of Rogorbello, at 750 metres, with its baroque church of San Sebastiano; higher up are the Susen summer pastures and, at 2,050 metres, the Alpe Schiazzera refuge with its small alpine lakes. The Passo del Portone leads down into the Swiss Val Poschiavo, while the Sentiero Italia trail heads to Val Grosina.

Tirano is the starting point of the Bernina Red Train, a UNESCO World Heritage line that reaches St. Moritz via the Ospizio Bernina. Bormio, with its thermal baths and ski slopes, is about half an hour by car; nearby are the Mortirolo, Gavia and Stelvio climbs, mountain-bike and e-bike routes and, in winter, snowshoe trails.
