Castello di Roncade is one of the most unique examples of living Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy. It is the only pre-Palladian villa to be surrounded by Medieval walls with crenellations and towers. The Castello stands right in the heart of Roncade, a small town in the Veneto countryside between Treviso and Venice.
It sits on the ruins of a tenth century castle given to the Collalto Counts by Emperor Otto II. Indeed, the original castle was destroyed by Cangrande della Scala. It was only in the sixteenth century that Girolamo Giustinian, a member of the Venetian aristocracy, set out to rebuild the castle upon the ruins of the former edifice. He built the complex as we can still see it today.
