In San Asensio, in Rioja Alta, the hill of the Barrio de las Cuevas holds more than three hundred cellars carved into the rock in the sixteenth century by the village winegrowers, to keep their wine at a constant temperature of around 13 degrees. The Lecea family still keeps four of them in use, connected to one another, where they continue to make their wines: a restoration recognised with the Best Of architecture award and by the Rutas del Vino de España for the protection and enhancement of heritage.
The guided tour takes you through these calados, more than five hundred years old, and tells the most curious winemaking customs of the area, from concrete vats to traditional foot-treading, tracing the origins of Rioja wine. It ends with a guided tasting of three of the winery's wines, served with a selection of local bites.
