Two of the great medieval towns of Tuscany lie within an hour of Florence. San Gimignano still keeps around fifteen of the seventy-odd towers its merchant families built to outdo one another; Siena, Florence's historic rival, is built around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, where the Palio is run twice every summer, and a cathedral striped in black and white marble.
A private car and driver take you through the Chianti and Val d'Elsa countryside at your own pace, with a stop at Monteriggioni, the circle of walls and towers Dante compared to giants. A local guide in Siena and a tasting of Vernaccia in San Gimignano can be added to the day.
