The eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 buried two very different towns. Pompeii was a busy commercial city, with its forum, bakeries, taverns and theatres; Herculaneum, smaller and closer to the volcano, was a seaside resort for wealthy Romans, sealed under twenty metres of volcanic material that preserved wooden beams, upper floors and even food.
Seeing both in one day, with an archaeologist who has worked on the excavations, shows how Roman life was lived at every level: the streets, the frescoes, the plaster casts of the victims, the latest discoveries. A private car collects you in Naples and takes you between the two sites.
Comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential; Pompeii alone covers sixty-six hectares.
