Ca' Macana has made carnival masks in Dorsoduro since the 1980s, by hand and in papier-mâché, as they were made when the Carnival of Venice lasted for months. Its masks have appeared in theatre and cinema, and the workshop remains one of the few in the city where every piece is still produced on site.
In this course the artisans introduce you to the traditional characters, from the bauta to the moretta and the plague doctor, and then guide you through the decoration of your own mask: base colours, gold leaf, crackle, fine brushwork. You leave with the finished piece.
Suitable for families with children. The workshop is a short vaporetto ride from Ruzzini Palace.
Day experience, accommodation not included. For your stay in Venice we suggest Ruzzini Palace, a sixteenth-century palazzo on Campo Santa Maria Formosa, between Rialto and St. Mark's, with frescoed halls and painted beams.
Duration: 1 hour
Where: Ca' Macana workshop, Dorsoduro 3215, Venice
Workshop opening hours: March to November 10am-8pm; December to February 10am-6:30pm. The course time is arranged when booking.
