Dante's exile

At the edge of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, almost on the border with Umbria, halfway between Mercatello sul Metauro and Borgo Pace, lies Castello della Pieve. It is a characteristic village, tiny but beautiful, recognizable by its medieval tower, the rows of houses built of dark stone, and the small 17th-century church of San Giovanni Battista in the center, surmounted by a modest bell tower. This jewel of a village was one of the fortifications that formed the defensive system of the small province of Massa Trabaria.
According to tradition, the conference that decided Dante's exile from Florence was held here.
